O Level vs IGCSE: What Is the Difference?
Cambridge O Level and Cambridge IGCSE are both international qualifications for students around age 16, and they are very similar in level. The differences are mostly about where they are offered and how papers are structured.
The main differences
- Availability: IGCSE is offered around the world, while O Level is offered in a smaller group of countries, including Pakistan.
- Paper levels: many IGCSE subjects have Core and Extended routes, while O Level has one level for everyone, usually close to Extended.
- Grades: O Level is graded A* to E, while IGCSE is graded A* to G or 9 to 1.
- Subjects: O Level includes country specific subjects such as Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies.
- Syllabus codes: the same subject has different codes, such as Mathematics 4024 at O Level and 0580 at IGCSE.
Is one harder than the other?
At the top end they are similar. IGCSE Extended and O Level cover comparable content, though the exact topics and paper formats differ by subject. IGCSE Core is easier, but it limits the highest grade you can get, so check this before you choose it.
Do universities treat them the same?
Both are Cambridge qualifications and are generally treated as equivalent for moving on to AS and A Level. Entry rules vary, so always check the requirements of the school, college or university you are applying to.
How to choose
- Start with what your school or exam centre offers.
- Compare the syllabus for each subject, not only the name of the qualification.
- Look at past papers from both to see which paper style suits you.
- If you are a private candidate, check which subjects and series your exam centre can enter you for.
